Botox is an injection that works by weakening the muscles of facial expression in the forehead, between the eyebrows, the crow's feet, and the neck. Once the muscle is paralyzed, the skin flattens out and the wrinkles smooth out naturally. After injected the Botox can take between 2 to 7 days to take effect and the wrinkles will less over a 6 to 12 week period. Botox injections are temporary and will last between 3 to 6 months. When the Botox starts to wear off you will notice a return of your wrinkles although they may not be as deep. At that time you may come in for another treatment. Dr. Joseph recommends] that you do not have the treatment any sooner than 2 months apart as repeated injections at close intervals, regardless of the amount injected, may lead to a resistance to the Botox. The forehead is the only exception to this, as it is initially treated in 2 treatments one week apart so as to lessen the chance of eyebrow drooping. Sometimes due to the severity of some wrinkles, correction with Botox injections will not eradicate them. This is because the deep creases are in the structure of the skin and are no longer caused by the muscles pulling on the skin. These types of wrinkles tend to be in areas that are very hyperactive and are deep lines usually located in sun damaged skin or in patients over the age of 60. The treatment works best in patients between the ages of 30 to 60 and is less effective in patients in their 60's and 70's, as the] wrinkles in older patients tend not to be caused by muscle pull and are more likely to be caused by sun damage and loss of skin elasticity. During the consultation, the areas that are amenable to improvement with Botox will be pointed out to you. The cost of the Botox treatment varies depending on the number of areas treated and the amount of the Botox injected. Call the office for more details. |
